HERC Reviews BUFFY 6.3!!

Buffy 6.3 FAQ

What’s it called?

“After Life.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay credited to Jane Espenson, who last penned that giant hunk of comedy genius “Intervention” (the episode that introduced the Buffybot).

What does TV Guide say?

“As Buffy adjusts to life after resurrection, a shadowy presence menaces her sidekicks - a side effect of the spell cast by Willow (Alyson Hannigan) to bring the Slayer back.

What is TV Guide not telling us?

We learn tonight how Buffy really spent the summer.

What did Herc say about Buffy 6.3 in his infamous July 4 spoilers?

”As the Scoobs contend with a demon ghost, Buffy realizes she was happier with the peace of the afterlife. She finds a sympathetic ear in someone else who knows something about an afterlife: Spike.”

What were Herc’s infamous Sept. 29 spoilers for 6.3?

* Giles spends the episode in England.

* 6.3 starts only minutes after 6.2 ends. Fearful demon bikers are still roaring out of town. Buffy is still covered with blood and the dirt of her own grave.

* In act one, Spike reunites with Buffy for the first time since Glory’s tower in 5.22 – and is, of course, overcome by a flood of emotion.

* Spike endures a very bad headache when he slams Xander into a tree in the Summers’ front yard.

* Though still not herself by any means, Buffy is back on patrol the very next night. And finally encounters Spike alone.

* Anya, Dawn and Xander are sequentially possessed by the demon.

* The demon is defeated on two fronts: Tara and black-eyed Willow do a spell; Buffy combats the demon in her own bedroom.

* On Buffy’s second day back on earth, she is more herself and finally thanks the scoobs for bringing her back.

* The episode ends with a telling Buffy-Spike conversation.

Did Herc’s sources get it right?

They did.

When do we learn how Buffy really spent her summer?

In that final, telling conversation with Spike.

Any surprises?

Michele Trachtenberg may still be growing. She looks maybe five inches taller than her “big” sister this week.

Any idea what’s with all the numbered shirts?

Methinks the actors are fucking with us.

What are Buffy’s first words this week?

”It’s different.”

Is Giles informed?

Off-camera. “Glad, but kind of weirded out, which I get,” Willow relates to Tara. “Lots of ‘Dear Lord’s.’”

What’s good?

Spike has a chilling theory with regard to why he was left out of the loop. Herc got pretty creeped out at least twice more during this installment. Also, fanatics won’t be able to help hanging on every wisp of dialogue as they try to work out why Buffy seems so unhappy.

What’s not so good?

Herc, who is easily depressed and takes “Buffy” much too seriously, found the final conversation way depressing. Those who share Herc’s reaction will be cheered to know that Herc has read the hilarious script for 6.4, and that he believes Buffy will be much more her old self next week.

What did Herc say about Buffy’s state of mind last week?

”It’s strongly implied that Buffy was happier in the afterlife and intends to kill herself to get back.”

Who dared to defy Herc last week?

The talkbacker “Simian,” who wrote: “Herc is Waaaaayyyyyyy Wrong...She asks Dawn "Is this Hell?"- Implying that she doesnt know she is alive at all...its more presumable that she has no memory of an afterlife whatsoever, that her last thought was of dying, explaining her return to the site of her death and her state of confusion.”
