What’s TV Guide not telling us?
As befitting a show set primarily on Risa, it’s a babe-fest. We get to spend loads of time with Hoshi, Cutler and T’Pol, while Trip and Malcolm cruise the local talent pool – essayed by some of the hottest actresses in Los Angeles.
The Big News?
The Suliban and the temporal cold war loom large over this week’s installment.
Hoshi learns a new language?
The language of looooooove. We get to see Hoshi’s lusty side.
Why is the alien beauty troubled?
It turns out she and Archer have something in common.
How do the aliens take advantage of Trip and Reed?
Suffice it to say the folks at “Deep Space Nine” made way too big a deal out of Odo’s abilities. When you think about it, Kirk encountered a shapeshifter way back in 1969’s “Whom Gods Destroy,” right?
What’s great?
The episode is teeming with small virtues. The ambiguous nature of Archer’s troubled alien beauty. The Lou Costello-like manner in which Trip grips Reed’s arm at a critical juncture. The sight of Hoshi, naked and in love. But without question the episode’s MVP is Phlox. The doctor’s addled, crabby grogginess at being prematurely roused from induced hibernation ranks as one of the funniest bits ever to visit the Star Trek franchise.
What’s not so great?
It’s a bit odd how open T’Pol and the other Vulcans are about sex in general and the seven-year spawning cycle in particular. In 1967’s “Amok Time,” Spock and others of his race seemed to treat the Vulcan sexual cycle as a huge secret. (If memory serves, Tuvok was equally closed-mouthed about it.) For the record, though, I consider T’Pol’s openness about the subject far more logical.
