Anton Sirius Previews the TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL! Good Titles!

Hey folks, Harry here... The magical list from Toronto has hit and there are many names of many films upon it. Anton is going to attempt to sort through them and place them in the categories of 20 - Must See Movies and 20 Probable-See Movies. However... He's missing a movie, that I'm going to go out on a limb and will say that it will be the movie that debuts in Toronto - that will have film geeks spasming for months waiting to see. It is on neither list. The movie is called CABIN FEVER and it is the very last film to play at Toronto. It will play at Midnight the final Saturday Night of the fest.

Why am I saying this? Well - a few months ago, I received a couple of letters from some guys at KNB Fx. They had seen a rough cut of the film, and they felt it was the best Horror film they've worked on. That includes films like EVIL DEAD 2, DAY OF THE DEAD, ARMY OF DARKNESS, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. Now I know... you've already left to head to IMDB to find out who made this film, and you clicked on the Director's name... an Eli Roth. You discovered that he is essentially some kid that won a student Academy Award for a short film, that he's been David Lynch's research assistant for a while and that he was Howard Stern's Alarm Clock for a period of his life. Now the interesting part is that David Lynch produced this film.

Why is that a good sign? Well the last Horror film that was executive produced by David Lynch was NADJA... and sure while that didn't set the world aflame... I did get a blowjob from a girl I was seeing while watching NADJA at the Dobie Theater in 1994. So hey! I can't wait to see this flick... with a date... "Hello?" "Anybody?" hehehe... Actually, I've heard a lot about this flick in the off the record fashion, and it looks like I'll be seeing it before it plays Toronto (God and Developing Labs willing that is). This is supposed to be a horror film for those of us that love the great films that Fangoria was built upon! Keep your fingers crossed... and don't miss it when it plays! Now, here's Anton with a rundown...

Anton Sirius’ Quickie Toronto Film Fest 2002 Preview

G’day, starkinder! I’ve got a bit of time to kill before I shlep off to Burning Money Man, so I thought I’d crash the launch press conference for the Toronto film fest this year.

Here’s the down and dirty-

20 must-see movies: 8 Mile, the Eminem film by Curtis Hanson; Auto Focus; Bad Guy, the new one from Kim Ki-duk (The Isle); Bowling for Columbine from Michael Moore; Bubba Ho-Tep; Takeshi Kitano’s Dolls; Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven; Frida, directed by Julie Taymor; Tom Tykwer directing an unproduced Kieslowski script with Heaven; a tres interesting Belgian project- three films with the same settings and actors/characters that take place simultaneously, not consecutively, called simply La Trilogie; Lost in La Mancha, the Gilliam/Quixote doc; MC5- A True Testimonial (if you need to ask...); PTA’s Punch-Drunk Love; Shaolin Soccer (OK, I’ve already seen it, sure, but not on the big screen); Shinya Tsukamoto’s A Snake of June; Cronenberg’s Spider; Spirited Away (technically being called by Miramax Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, hmmm); Almodovar’s Talk to Her; The Eye, from Thailand’s the Pang Brothers; and of course Volcano High.

20 probable-see films: Ozon’s 8 Femmes; All or Nothing from Mike Leigh; Denzel’s directorial debut, Antwone Fisher; Egoyan’s Ararat; Mehta’s Bollywood/Hollywood; Matt Dillon’s directorial debut (!) City of Ghosts; Shekhar Kapur’s remake of the Four Feathers; van Sant and Damon reteaming for Gerry; Neil Jordan’s Bob le flambeur remake The Good Thief; Jim Sheridan’s In America; Amos Gitai’s Kedma; L’homme du train, starring (of all people) French rock god Johnny Hallyday; Lukas Moodyson’s Lilya 4-ever; Fruit Chan’s Public Toilet; Russian Ark, a 90-minute single take in St. Petersburg’s Hermitage; Loach’s Sweet Sixteen; Chen Kaige’s Together; Tuck Everlasting, with Rory Gilmore... er, Alexis Bloedel; Denis’ Vendredi soir; and, just ‘cause, Kenneth Anger’s 1949 film Puce Moment (in with the Wavelengths series).

Guess who’s coming to Toronto?: PTA and Adam Sandler; Terry Gilliam; Bruce Campbell; many many many others.

Be there Saturday night, or just... well, just don't let me catch you griping about it... You've been warned... GET THERE!!! You'll laugh 8 ounces off that ass of yours!

The official dates for our Toronto Film Fest screenings are:

I hear we're already getting some buzz up there. If there's any way to get these dates/times on the site, that would be cool, as it would be nice to let the Bruce fans know, as Bruce will definitely be there for the Sat premiere.
