THE GREATEST DVD NEWS OF THE YEAR... so far

THE GREATEST DVD NEWS OF THE YEAR!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

This letter makes me giddy:

HAH!!

This is famous comic book artist Stephen Bissette writing at his message board:

"I'm very happy to announce that a FAX arrived at work today from our Disney rep, who knew I'd been pushing him and the studio for years now on the matter.

The FAX states that this April, Disney is releasing the Hayao Miyazaki Collection 1 on DVD. Though details are sketchy, there will be three titles in this first set - SPIRITED AWAY, CASTLE IN THE SKY (aka LAPUTA), and KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE - and each DVD will be a two-disc special edition.

This is indeed worthy of celebration, and goes a looooong way towards rectifying what has been, until now, a frustrating and oft-infuriating situation."

Wow. I was just talking about this the other day with a friend who was good enough to loan me his box of Region 0 Miyazaki DVDs. No special features to speak of, but who cares? It was a collection of all of his movies up to PRINCESS MONONOKE. Now, we’re going to get 2-disc special editions of three great films at once? Oh, please, let this mean that they’re going to do TOTORO, PORCO ROSSO, and NAUSICAA in the future. I know Fox just released one last edition of their horrifically dubbed TOTORO, and now they don’t have the rights anymore, allegedly because they’ve been granted to Disney as part of their overall Ghibli deal. I’ve seen this version of CASTLE IN THE SKY theatrically, and I really like the work they did on KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE, too, but a 2-disc set may mean that fans will get to choose to see the films in their original languages, too. Man, to think this release is just a few months off...

... well, like I said... giddy!!

"Moriarty" out.
