BETWEEN THE CRACKS! Stuff We Missed! Van Sant Still PSYCHO' INDY On DVD' HELLBOY Shuffle! Soderbergh On OCEAN

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I know these aren’t exactly sparking-new scoops, but there were several things that showed up in my inbox that I wanted to include in today’s update, so I thought I’d combine several of them into one quickie column.

First up, there’s this week’s big “Are You Shitting Me?” news, the idea that Gus Van Sant might be returning to the scene of his most infamous crime. Check out what Clint from MOVIEHOLE had to say:

Gus Van Sant is planning to remake PSYCHO for a second time!

While talking to Moviehole about his new film "Gerry", Gus Van Sant revealed that he is in talks to do another version of "Psycho".

"I’m thinking of remaking “Psycho” again. Doing a third remake. The idea this time is to really change it – we’re talking about doing a Punk rocker setting. Viggo Mortensen suggested it. He was married to Exene Cervenka and knows all the right people to get involved – all the right punk rocker etc – so he would definitely be involved if we go ahead.", he says.

"“Psycho” was great, a huge kind of grand experiment project. Very trial by fire. It met with a lot of criticism – but we managed to keep afloat, I think we broke even"

Van Sant also said one of his films might get made after all. "

We were in pre-production on the John Travolta picture “Standing Room Only” and it came apart – financially it was a bit shaky. We’ll possibly do that again sometime."

I still say Van Sant blew it not in the notion of doing a remake of PSYCHO, but in squandering the opportunity for surprise. He kept saying “Frame by frame remake,” but if he’d really wanted to unsettle people, he should have taken that abrupt left turn at the Bates Motel when Marion Crane (Anne Heche) is in the shower. Instead of killing her there, Van Sant should have had her make it through the shower intact, suddenly throwing the frame-by-frame remake idea out the window. It would have brought the material to new life. Just setting it against the backdrop of the punk scene doesn’t seem like reason enough to go back to the well again, but I suppose Van Sant’s long since given up worrying about any sort of real commercial success or sanity.

Another reader wrote in to tell us that there were further rumors of the release of INDIANA JONES on DVD this week, and I’ll let him tell you where he heard it:

Hey Harry.

I was a little surprised that I didn't read anything about this on AICN... Paramount has announced the INDIANA JONES movies on DVD!

Check it out! This came from DVD Review...

February 4, 2003

A slew of major announcements have come in over the weekend. Many of which contain very little in the way of details, but all of which we would be negligent in not reporting. First from Paramount Home Entertainment comes two highly anticipated trilogies. Jack Ryan finally gets the anamorphic treatment, as The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are re-released with improved transfers and interviews with the cast and crew. Far more anticipated is the release in late 2003 of The Indiana Jones Trilogy. No details at all are available on the set, but will start surfacing soon.

Just thought I'd pass it along in case you missed it!

I am...

Mirthquake

Creator of Cartoons that crack you up!

Well, thanks, Mirth. I’ll definitely follow up on that with my friends at Paramount and let’s see if we can figure out exactly what’s going on with these titles. Last I heard, Spielberg and Lucas were trying to get the studio to agree to releasing all three films in one box set instead of doing them as individual titles spread over several months.

This next bit’s a couple of links to some new HELLBOY details, courtesy of CountingDown.com. Del Toro’s been dealing with a little bit of cast shuffle as he gets set up in Prague, but when I visited the HELLBOY offices the day before he left Los Angeles, the work they had done was jaw-dropping... just incredible stuff. I’m confident that these little hiccups aren’t going to have any negative impact on what looks like one of the coolest films of the already very cool summer of 2004:

Hey guys!

We just got some neat Hellboy stuff in. First off, an interview with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, where he voices his opinions on casting and production so far:

And secondly, official word from Guillermo del Toro in Prague about recent cast additions and subtractions!

CLICK HERE FOR GORDO DEL TORO!!

Awesome. Thanks for that, man.

Last up, we’ve got Steven Soderbergh talking about OCEAN’S 12 and the way he plans to make this stand out from the normal way sequels are put together:

Hey there,

Don't know if anyone has e-mailed you with this, but there's an interview with Steven Soderberg in the latest issue of UK film magazine "Total Film". It drops a few hints about the sequel to Ocean's 11-

TOTAL FILM: So is Ocean's Twelve a goer then?

SS: Oh, yeah! I know there's a better version of this movie to be had. When we were coming back from doing press in December 2001, I asked everybody if the idea appealed and they were cool. But they had to make a promise: that is, we're gonna be the first sequel in history that costs exactly the same as the first one. And since the scale of the sequel's gonna be even bigger, they're all gonna have to take an even bigger pay cut than last time. But I think somebody needs to do this - stop the idea that the second one has to be more expensive.

TOTAL FILM: So it's set in Europe, right?

SS: Yeah, it is. But until I go on a reccie, I haven't settled on what those three cities in Europe will be. So, you know, I'm thinking of stopping in Amsterdam for - ooh - about a year... (laughs)

He also mentions briefly the Eros film that he's doing with Antonioni and Wong Kar-wai, shooting a segement each, saying his is just a five day shoot. And that he's writing a book about The Sopranos, though he doesn't go into any detail but I can only assume it's the TV show he's talking about. The mind boggles...

Hope this is of interest, call me Jackie,

all the best

Jackie

A book about THE SOPRANOS? Huh? I think I might have to head to Amsterdam myself to see if Soderbergh’s been sampling the local wares, and if so, if that means we’ll get a more psychedelic sequel. Let’s hope...

And thanks to everyone for dropping us these reminders.

"Moriarty" out.
