The Trekmasters seem to be going back to a few old ways. Not only are they said to be calling their new Trek series “Enterprise,” they also seem to be willing to return a white American male to the captain’s chair.

reports that Paramount is now negotiatng with “Quantum Leap” star Scott Bakula to play the lead starfleet captain on the fifth live-action “Star Trek” TV series.

What’s “Enterprise” about? There is little certainty. Christian learned two weeks ago of a Paramount memo to talent agents describing the new series as a prequel to the original Kirk & Spock “Star Trek.” While one can be certain that the recent memo DID accurately describe the ages and genders of the actors for whom the Trek producers are looking, some of the other info in the memo could be misleading.

Long before the issuance of this memo, it was rumored that the new series would deal with a 29th century “timeship” capable of transversing eras. This time-travel aspect certainly would not preclude a fleeting or permanent visit to an earlier period, but don’t be surprised if that casting memo failed to tell the whole story. The prequel premise described can be considered at least a little suspect, as could the names of the characters - if only because there’s just not a lot of reasons to leak so much information to talent agents, many of whom are just the gabbiest little things.

As a result, Herc is not ready to rule out the time-travel aspect of the premise. At least three of the most successful “Trek” movies involved time travel. Some of the most satisfying stories in all four of the previous live-action TV series involved all manner of "temporal anomalies." And the Trekmasters obviously love the time-travel concept, because they employ it almost incessantly. Plus, as so many concluding sentences will tell you, only time will tell…
