Mr Beaks here...
Those of you who (wrongly) brushed off D.J. Caruso's DISTURBIA as a teen-skewing ripoff of Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW might be inclined to turn up your noses at his follow-up: the innocent-man-on-the-lam action/adventure EAGLE EYE. If so, you really need to watch this mayhem-laden theatrical trailer hosted by Yahoo! Movies (which'll probably be attached to every print of WANTED this weekend). Why isn't this coming out in the summer again?
I get it. The marketplace is way crowded, and Universal's MUMMY 3 is looking like the escapist film to beat this August. Also, there was a big hole in the late September schedule. That said, this looks like an irresistible amalgam of Hitchcock and 1990s Tony Scott - which is a happy kind of mash-up as far as I'm concerned (but go ahead and act like you didn't dig TRUE ROMANCE, CRIMSON TIDE and ENEMY OF THE STATE). Caruso's definitely come into his own as a filmmaker (further proof that THE SHIELD is good for you), and Shia's... Shia. If this displeases you, concentrate on the killer supporting cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Chiklis, Rosario Dawson, William "I pooshed the cart!" Sadler and Michelle Monaghan.
I recently spoke with a discerning fellow who saw the first act and change of this movie, and he described it as "breathtaking", "unrelenting", "a cinematic hand shandy". You know you're seeing this.
