Muldoon weighs in on Nicolas Lopez's SANTOS from Fantastic Fest!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I loved Nicolas Lopez's PROMEDIO ROJO and really dug his latest, SANTOS, at Fantastic Fest. What a fucked up dude, and I mean that in the very best, most affectionate way possible. I'll have my thoughts on the flick this coming week, but first up is our very own Muldoon! Enjoy!
First off, I've never seen director Nicolas Lopez's other feature, PROMEDIO ROJO and I hadn't heard a damn thing about it. I didn't know who the guy was until he was brought on stage and forced an air sex fake blowjob on Tim League before the screening. Apparently League brought him in as a last minute guest judge for the Air Sex Championship after Kevin Smith's movie last week. Well, that air blowjob was just a taste of how off the wall crazy this filmmaker is.
His movie, SANTOS, is by far one of the craziest flicks I've been fortunate enough to catch this year. As the screening is in Austin, the home of Rodriguez and Avellan's Troublemaker outfit, it's easy to look over the fact that the film pops even without all of the fancy visual effects provided for the film by the Troublemaker FX team. The truth of the matter is, the movie works. It worked for me at least. Anytime you can mix super heroes with a half man half fly creature who snorts shit – actual shit – to get high, well what else could a movie need?
The movie starts off with two best friends and the girl they both love. At their birthday party a comet passes over and changes the course of their lives forever when one of the two kids parents die in a car wreck and the other gains a special power. 15 years later we pick up with the two best friends at the cusp of their launching of a new comic book when the same comet passes over and a mysterious fire burns down every single copy of their new comic.
A few more years pass when we find our hero waiting tables in order to pay off the debt caused by the fire. His friend had a terrible car crash which kept him in a coma for a long while. The coma friend, rich from his parent's trust fund, now wishes to hire his old pal to try again with the comic thing…
I don't want to give away anymore, but just know that I left out all the parts with giant fat spandexed men, the hot chicks, fart jokes, and amazing special effects. The film's not just an imitation of SHARK BOY AND LAVA girl, but a completely imaginative cartoon of a flick that is every much as fun to watch as the best comedies of the PORKY'S. This movie is a fun joyride on an acid trip of awesomeness baked in a cake of funny.
