can we get some crazy new classic original shit in the door please? I want some new icons I can brag about to my kids in the next ten years when they are failing to remake it. Are there no more ballsy writers and directors with an original idea in mind that can sell to a wide audience?

Will there be a scene where Freddy stands in the middle of the boiler room while a bunch of flying knived gloves engulf him and the music swells?? Or maybe Morgan Freeman shows him a nice sweater, but Freddy asks... 'Does it come in red and green?'... I freaking love it when they go back to the beginning!!!

I’m sure I'll get raped for saying this, but if they insist on remaking the film, I actually hope they go so far as to find a new Freddy. At best we'll get a completely new interpretation of the character, at worst the film will suck and we can go back to worshiping the original. I say cast Frank Miller, dude already looks like Freddy.

I found the remake of CAPE FEAR very overrated. By depicting Max Cady's actions as the behavior of psycho, they lost the element of simple, pure evil, as portrayed in the original. Nothing about this remake of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET sounds promising. I don't want to see a film that delves into the psychology of Freddy Krueger, a character that is supposed to be mysterious and dark.

Spot on. The Mist is exactly the sort of film that should be made more often. It just opened here in the UK on a handful of screens, the distributors didn't know what to do with it because it didn't have some block of balsa like Orloondo Bland in it. If they gave it proper advertising it could have been a hit. Somebody sack those twentysomething fools in charge of development slates and hire some people who actually have a fucking clue for a change.

Talk about a franchise that doesn't need to be reinvented. The interest was waning right around when they made the 6th or 7th one of these. Its tremendously difficult to pull off a good horror movie, even harder to pull off successful sequels, and near impossible to re-invent the franchise once you've made multiple movies. Hence the lackluster results of Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The reason movies like SAW and The Ring were fiscally triumphant is because they were new and fresh. I need a new Freddy Krueger like I need a gang rape from the surviving Golden Girls (RIP Estelle, you can have me when I get to heaven).

Can't they just let Englund keep it?
by loserguy3000
Jul 23rd, 2008
06:14:31 PM
seriously...remake Halloween or Jason all you want - its a dude behind a mask. But Freddy is all Englund, all the time. Its his distinct, incredible personality that sells the character 100% and the reason this franchise became the largest grossing horror of all time and made New Line Cinema.

Remember those back-stories where they showed Freddy before the scarring? Freaky fuck as hell! This was a dude that didn't need the make-up, and although some of you hate it, he almost became lovable when he started doing comedy with the character. Remember that stuffed Freddy doll - FOR KIDS - they sold at toy stores? How fucked up is that? seriously...

Leave this character alone... Freddy vs. Jason made mega-millions because they know this character. Recreate it and you break that chain. You can't possibly repeat that magic, and you'll fuck up a beloved franchise thinking you can. Everyone knows it, and everyone is telling you not to. Let it be, and make something else...let it be, please just let it be...

I am not all that upset about the remake. As much as it scared the hell out of me in the theaters when I was a kid, it hasn't exactly held up well over the years. As long as they stay true to the original with a good script and cast, I think a new Nightmare could buck the trend of horrible remakes. Granted that is a lot to hope for.

But since it has been reported all over the web (and when I say all over the web, I mean this thread) that Ron Pearlman is Freddie, it is off to a good start.

by Wes_Reviews_

Why not let Englund stay? It's not like they're going to continue the remake series with sequel after sequel. They'll just abandon it after one movie, like all the other remakes out there. If they're lucky, they might manage one sequel (like TCM and Hills Have Eyes), but really, any thought that they need a "younger" actor just because of potential sequels is just ridiculous.

"Elm Street" Without Freddy?
by DeeJay
Jul 23rd, 2008
09:51:51 PM
Perhaps the best thing to do would be to try persuading England to perform a cameo and "pass down" the mantle to another Elm Street character or to appear at story's end (akin to Charleton Heston from "Planet of the Apes 2") in conflict with said upstart. This would offer a number of different possibilities and, perhaps, 2 days of filming might be attractive to Englund. Ultimately, the strength of the story should be rooted in its exploration of nightmares... which looks to be one of the goals the filmmakers have already set. If the filmmakers are resolute about re-casting Kreuger, I vote for Micheal Emerson. He may ask for too much money, and his filming schedule might be compromised with "Lost," but you never know. Between his work on "Lost" and "The Practice," there shouldn't be much doubt that he could pull it off...
... but I vote for sequel over remake.

Freddy became a clown and not a figure of real horror. If we've learned anything from The Dark Knight it's not delving into backstory makes a character more horrifying. I think a new Nightmare is going to be an orgy of CGI and that will be its undoing.
Rev. Slappy (RS)
by DeeJay
Jul 23rd, 2008
11:00:18 PM
RS... I won't argue with your assesment of the Freddy character becoming silly. Just too many jokes. That's why I think the filmmakers have the right idea by going with a "darker" approach than most of the last few installments. I think re-booting the series would damage its continuity in the long run, and would advise against it. They actually have a good collection of characters in the Nightmare universe, and if they won't have Englund on board, I think they could craft their story in a manner that would allow them to introduce a new threat (with an Englund cameo being perfunctory). Finally, I *hope* they don't go overboard with CGI (a la "Van Helsing"). If they stand by their goal to delve deeper into the psychology of nightmares, they could actually make one of the better installments in the series.

Nightmare on Elm Street without Robert Englund as Freddy = massive who gives a fuck. This isn't like recasting Jason or Leatherface or even Frankenstein's Monster, this is like recasting Indiana Jones or something, where the actor is the character. Bad, bad, bad, stupid bad idea.

Oh, and speaking of bad ideas, MTV is remaking The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Phillip Noyce is remaking Captain Blood. Just in case there wasn't enough remake news for you today already.

I mean, the serie's has been doing the high school thing for decades (save for New Nightmare) and it's getting a little old. If you want to make the new one "dark", why NOT have Freddy attack more defenseless characters like those still in grade school or, at leas, junior high?

I mean, Freddy vowed to come back to kill the children of Elm street, and was a child murderer, so why would he change his modus operandi post mortem?

How insane would it be to set him in the nightmares of 5th graders?
How's that for your "dark tone"?
IMO the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is the most brilliant + original ghost story of the 20th century, certainly the most genius ghost character at least. The fact that the original film still stands up under the weight of 900 lbs. of awful hammy sequels is a testament to the strength of the concept. The original nails the unsettling weirdness of nightmares - beds turning into upside down blood fountains, phones becoming burnt tongues, you run up the stairs and they turn into marshmellow goo. Nightmares are often ridiculous and the original stayed true to that idea while never crossing the line into campy.
There's no way these hacks will come close to the inventiveness of the real deal.

While its true they never stated that he never molested children, I think it may have been implied in the films. If they are going ahead with this remake, they should make him into a child molesting/rapist murdering torturer of children. Make his character dispicable to look at on screen, almost giving the viewer a reason to hate him. The thing about the sequels to the original series of films I hated the most was turning Freddy into a comedian. People rooted for the bad guy, and though rooting for Jason or Michael Meyers to kill drug taking, promiscuous big boobed teenage babysitters is cool, I think having Freddy portrayed as a child raping torturer/murderer would set this film apart from the other remakes. Make Freddy int Hannibal Lectur from "Lambs." Make him scary and creepy so when he does get his fire bath, you are actually rooting for the parents who burned him. I remember when horror films were, well filled with horror. What is more horrific than to have the main protagonist play possibly the most horrible thing our society has? No more horrific than child rape.

The existing series needs a bookend. Freddy vs. Jason left an opening for a sequel and if New Line insists on remaking both Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, the existing continuity will never be concluded. I would gladly welcome a remake AFTER and only AFTER the current series has a proper conclusion.
