It does amaze me, that a guy with such limited range and so-so screen presence, gets so many opportunities. I don't think he's a bad actor, just not all that interesting to watch. The posters are sweet, though. The second one is excellent. Do we know who or what company did it? I'd love to see more of their work.

PG-13 "action movies"
by DennisMM
Jul 24th, 2008
11:36:52 AM
I did an IMDB search for 1975 and 1980, two pretty gritty years, and you know what I found? The R-rated crime and suspense dramas and even "action" films weren't crazed rides through exploding heads and flying cars. They were about people, and the action grew out of what the people cared about. Character -> plot -> activity. Otherwise it's just a load of crap. Want to talk violence? Sam Peckinpah. But we always cared about his characters. (Okay, maybe not "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia," but most of the time.) You want to watch people beat the crap out of one another for 90 minutes, go rent an old chop-socky film. Want to see things explode, there are films that will give you plenty of that. But action is not intrinsically based in violence.
But Max Payne has to be an R-Rated action movie, imho

Unless they've significantly fucked with the story, the games didn't have any supernatural elements, but they did have some very trippy dreams/hallucinations enduced by the Valkyr drug. It's possible these "angels" are part of a Valkyr hallucination, especially since Valkyr are minor angel-like deities in Norse mythology. It's a bit like using the fire breathing horse in Batman Begins in the trailer despite it not really being in the film beyond an hallucination.
Merrick - No Confusion Here
by loserguy3000
Jul 24th, 2008
12:13:26 PM
Merrick, there wasn't any 'confusion about the images release' to be had. You posted these images, you failed to quote where you got them, and it was only AFTER I bitched you changed your story (and you didn't even say you updated your story) to credit Dark Horizons.

No offense, but that's pretty janky if you ask me. Next time, rather than make excuses like "there was some confusion", how's about just saying "oops!" and give credit. Its OK to be wrong sometimes, and if you're ever going to be any sort of journalist you gotta SOURCE, SOURCE, SOURCE! Obama gets away with rambles and non-existent answers, but sad to say you're nowhere as sexy...

Not being mean Merrick, just being honest. I suspect the readers here will expect the same. Thanks for crediting Dark Horizons (although again, the original source was JoBlo.com)

Simple, undeniable fact: the vast, vast majority of video game movie adaptations have not only paled in comparison to the originals, but have been painfully bad. Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Double Dragon, Doom, Mortal Kombat; all sick jokes. The only one that hasn't been cringe-worthy was Silent Hill. And Silent Hill wasn't exactly an award-winner. The overwhelming probability is set squarely against Max Payne being anything but bad.

Represent being saved, I think. I remember reading about their imagery somewhere, but can't find or remember it now.

Could be the people dieing from the drug and being saved, either way I think it's some hallucination that only Max sees.

Or I could be way off and this movie could've dropped the ball more than previously imaginable.

The beauty of film is that you can include allegorical imagery to help propel the story. Those angels are, from the looks at the trailer, not literal representations or even hallucinations, but metaphorical images. I think they are badass, too.

Another instance of this type of imagery is in Snatch, when Brad Pitt is knocked to the mat, and they show him drowning underwater for the effect.

In the right hands, just a little bit of metaphysical imagery can convey moods and ideas, and compliment the story in ways that literal imagery cannot.

Wahlberg is crap. The man cannot act.

by Jack_Bauer
Jul 24th, 2008

No, they definately are hallucinations. I've read the script. Which is a little dumbed down from the game version I have to say, a lot less "1 man against the world" and a lot more of a simple detective/revenge story. It mostly stays true to the source in spirit rather than letter, but lets not kid ourselves, this movie is going to live or die on it's action and wahlbergs performance, because the script is good enough to easily make it the best video game adaptation so far.

The first poster is
by veritasses
Jul 24th, 2008
02:20:05 PM
better then the second but neither one is all that great. The first one goes for a dark, gritty, edgy look but doesn't quite achieve it with the somewhat clean and overly bright wall. The image of Max on the wall also doesn't work. It's clearly part of the wall because you can see the textures through Max but it's not really a drawing or graffiti, it's just a two tone, black and white image so it comes off as artificial and something some artist Photoshopped on and breaks the illusion of the location and gritty wall. Also, the way too tiny Brooklyn Bridge makes it look out of place and silly rather then setting location or adding contrast. The second poster is just trying way too hard. Eyes closed, on his knees, leaning back, palms up, guns pointing down, multiple light streams streaking across the full page over the guys face, the feathers, the fingers, the shaded angel. Just too much. Also, I realize the font is from the game, but for the images they were going for in the posters, the font just doesn't work. Narrow, clean, sharp, same height, all caps and in both cases, see-through, sort of cancels out the themes they were going for. The font is a minor quibble though.

And, really, Wahlberg was the fourth best thing in The Departed after Vera Fermiga's snootch, Dirty DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson.

Movies are obsolete? Really? That's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard. To compare the REASON for a movie experience to a video game, which interrupts the story for you to figure out what your doing wrong and why you keep dying is just fucking retarded. And the funniest thing is the "Who gives a shit?" posters. Clearly you do. And clearly the many others who bothered to read and reply. Got your answer, sports?

Why? Not for the trailers or the posters. Because I'm bored as fuck after work haha. Seriously thought if a football or baseball game is not on I'm seeing this because what else is there to do that month movie wise?

So we can't call shitty movies shitty just because somebody didn't pay us to make them ourselves? Let's say I go out to eat and my meal is fucking horrible, so I complain to the manager of the restaurant. By your rationale, the manager should tell me "Fuck you, cocksucker! Let's see you make adequate fucking eggs benedict, motherfucker!"

I know that. I was merely pointing it out so no 'props' should be given to the people attached to the movie, when the 'bad ass' poster is just taken more or less straight from the box-art of the game. It took no talent to do that...you jfp2007. That's right. I went there!
